AS A MORAL SATISFACTION

7
FOR AN INNOCENT MAN

8
IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This video essay was made of our volunteer work, without the knowledge of Rain or his representatives or any other person close to him.

9
1ST CHAPTER
FIGHT FOR JUSTICE

10
The world-famous RAIN, or rather private soldier Ji-hoon Jung's strange case took place in the force field of the media, the politics and the netizens at the beginning of 2013.

11
Although now it is 2015, in addition to the news about Rain permanently...

12
« THERE IS A SEA OF COMMENTS »

« THE MALICIOUS OR ABUSIVE REMARKS DO NOT CEASE »

15
« ACCUSATIONS ARE BEING THROWN BASED ON FALSE INFORMATION AND HEARSAY »

16
ENOUGH!

17
Why is this enough?

18
« OUR MOTIVATIONS »

We are waiting in vain for the real presentation of the facts of this case for nearly three years now, which would give a moral satisfaction to a person.

19
The lack of fact finding disturbs us, which brought Rain into an impossible situation, who presumably binds the military secrecy. So since then he silently tolerates to be target of tasteless jokes - we are not bound by such obligation so we try to change the situation with all of our available means.

20
« OUR AIM »

We consider it important that everyone can find the summary of the real facts on the web in addition to the false news and rumors.

21
2ND CHAPTER
THE OUTCOME OF THE ANALYSIS

22
FINAL SUMMARY

23
RAIN WAS COMPLETELY INNOCENT OF ALL CHARGES AGAINST HIM.

24
OUR CONCLUSIONS AS A RESULT OF THE ANALYSIS

25
OUR FIRST CLAIM

26
Rain, or rather private soldier Ji-hoon Jung fulfilled his mandatory military service perfectly, humbly and honestly, sometimes using all his remaining strength.

27
OUR SECOND CLAIM

28
Rain, or rather private soldier Ji-hoon Jung not received any privilege or excessive holidays during the period of his military service.

29
OUR THIRD CLAIM

30
A.
Rain, or rather private soldier Ji-hoon Jung did not violate the military rules.

B.
The mild punishment which was decided in his disciplinary case was an unfortunate example of when legality is not the same as justice.

31
OUR FOURTH CLAIM

32
Rain's hard won reputation and social status have been abused by the selfixh interest of the politics and the media, deceiving the citizens who trusted the authenticity of their information.

33
We will support our claims with data and facts.

But first a few words...

34
3RD CHAPTER
ABOUT US

35
BACKGROUND

36
« WE HAVE TRIED TO DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE PICTURE »

During the incident we followed the events by monitoring the Korean media and the published military documents step by step and the use of public documentation which were translated into English or were originally published in English.

37
We regularly wrote a lot of articles about the life of Rain in the military, especially about this case and finally made a more than 100-page analysis in 2013.

49
INTRODUCTION

50
Who are we?

51
We are people from various places of the world who heard the calling of Korea and responded by becoming volunteer helpers of its 'soft power'.

52
« OUR EXPLANATION »

We did this because we fell in love with the Korean people and the beauty, the culture and the artists of the country.

We are the ones who with fondness choose the Korean products against all other nation's.

53
We are delighted that we could get to know the excellent and unique RAIN, who - even though many of us are older than him - we regard as a role model.

That's why we stand up for him since we perceive that he suffers a serious unfairness.

54
4TH CHAPTER
FIVE MONTHS ON ACTIVE DUTY

55
DIFFERENT VIEWPOINTS

« RAIN ELISTED ON 10/11/2011 »

56
« BASIC SITUATION »

What was the relationship of Rain and the Army at the beginning?

57
« RAIN'S ATTITUDE »

Rain, who was the pride and a great role model of the Korean nation for a long time while when he was enlisted, was determined to perform in his military service excellently, living up to the expectations and worthy to his career and personality.

58
« THE MILITARY LEADERSHIP'S ATTITUDE »

The Army allowed the media for the first time that to broadcast the computerized draw of the camps for basic training.

59

60
« THE MILITARY LEADERSHIP'S ATTITUDE »

The military leadership said that there is no need for the media thereafter since Rain, the celebrity does not exist in the army. Only an ordinary soldier, Pvt. Ji-hoon Jung serving the military.

61
« PRIVATE SOLDIER JI-HOON JUNG »

62
« INTERPRETATION »

Since perhaps Rain is the most famous celebrity who has ever entered to the Korean Army so the military High Command wanted to demonstrate all the way that they do not grant any privileges even for him.

They did this because they were in the crossfire of political attacks since 2010 due of accusations of unequal treatment of conscripts.

63-65
« THE TENSION OF THE DRAW »

66
« THE RESULT OF THE DRAW »

Rain got into the 5th Infantry Division which is in the Demilitarized Zone which is known to be the actual frontline.

« A GENRE-PAINTING OF RAIN'S FIRST MILITARY DAYS »

http://memo-rain.ning.com/profiles/blogs/acct-11-11-30-a-behind-the-scenes-story-about-rain-after-four

78
"Both my friend's parents are from military families~~~~~ lucky devil!
As it happened, her uncle was Rain's commanding officer at the Supplement where Rain was enlisted last month.
After hearing so much about celebrities having no idea what they're doing, her uncle thought bad habits should be corrected in the very beginning.
But contrary to her uncle's belief, Rain's military discipline was very strict and tried to better than was possible as the days went by.
So her uncle began to feel sorry for Rain and wanted to be nice to him. Wishing to toalk with  Rain over a cup of coffee, her uncle commanded Rain to stop by his office when Rain was ready to move to the training camp after four days three nights.
Well, even then, Rain's discipline was never relaxed from start to finish even though hr uncle asked him to relax."

79
TWO-TIME ULTRA WARRIOR

80
« ACCORDING TO REPORTS OF SUPERIORS »

How did Rain fulfill his basic training?

81
« RAIN EXCELS IN EVERY WAY »

He gained 'Excellent shooter' and 'Ultra warrior' titles:

- his daytime shooting scores: 9/10
- his night shooting scores: 10/10
- the numbers of crunches under 1 minute: 90
- the numbers of pushups under 2 minutes: 108
- 3 km sprint within 12:30 minutes
- 30 km march within 8 hours record time

82-83
« RAIN RECEIVED HONORS »

84
"Actually, I'm not much of a hand at long-distance running. But deciding to bite a bullet, I obtained a good result in running even though I was all in as if internal organs poured from the stomach while having a long run. As a result, I became an ultra warrior. I think I have a genius for shooting to some fortunately. I was accepted as a good shot, that's why I became an ultra warrior. I had not suffered in vain and had a wonderful time."
RAIN, Demaclub interview, 13/14/2012

85
"I know quite well how he must feel. (laughs) My specialty in the army was the trench mortar in my recruit days, so I had to run with a mortar during the maneuvers that were very realistic. Then, the cold sweat even broke out all over me and my face turned as white as a sheet with fright. (laughs) If worst come to worst, I might have died."
RAIN, The Desire To Speed, 06/09/2012

86
"I always clean up our barrack. In my recruit, a squad ranked higher than me, who is 9 years younger than I, threw a mop to me, telling me to wash it with a smile. Then I picked up the mop on the ground and washed it diligently. It was a day I'll never forget.'
RAIN, Friends FM Radiojumam, 04/09/2012

87
"I think the weather at the region is still pretty harsh. I was chilled to the bones as my hot pack was freezing while being on sentry duty in Yeoncheon, and the winter in Yeoncheon is very svere, the thermometer frequently falling to 22C below zero."
RAIN, The Desire To Speed, 12/15/2012

88
"I also did guard duty at a guardhouse, but we were not allowed to eat anything while doing guard duty. Sentinels should not eat anything while doing guard duty."
RAIN, in response to a soldier's message, The Desire To Speed, 05/26/2012

89
AN IMPORTANT DECISION

90
What did Rain do afteer his basic training?

91
« HIS RESULTS ALLOWED IT »

He entered for a further 3 weeks extra training to become a teaching assistant. He fulfilled the increased requirements perfectly so he became the 'ultra warrior' doubly on the 9th of December.

92
« THE BACKGROUND OF RAIN'S DECISION »

He planned to fulfill his military duty as an active soldier at the same place in the mountain unit at DMZ.

He wanted to learn business English and to organize the history of the first decade of his career in his spare time.

93
« JI-HOON JUNG AS TEACHING ASSISTANT »

94
"... At first I thought it would be easy to teach others, but I am sure it was the hardest work among the departments because I had to set a good example to recruits while taking a couple of month course in a study on teaching assistant. I had to pass the examination to get credit for the course. Even though I put on a badge showing my being a teaching assistant was credited, I had to keep studying, and I had to go to bed a couple of hours later or get up an hour earlier, contrary to others. The position was attended with much difficulty because I had to set a good example to recruits."
RAIN, Demaclub interview, 03/14/2012

95

96
"I had also served as a teaching assistant for three months from January to March. While I was serving as a teaching assistant, the sweat was pouring down my back even though it was almost as cold as midwinter. Also, I was not getting enough sleep all the time. It is so hard to serve as a teaching assistant in the army."
RAIN, The Desire To Speed, 08/18/2012

97
How was Rain's first military Christmas?

98
In combat readiness, because due to the death of Kim Jong-il the whole army was on full alert since the 19th of December.

99
5TH CHAPTER
AN UNEXPECTED TURN

100
What happened at the time of Rain's vacation?

101-102
« SPORTS HANKOOK, 02/22/2012 »

103
http://memo-rain.ning.com/profiles/blogs/22-feb-12-sports-hankook-rain-s-position-will-be-changed-from-a

One of Rain's own aides said on the 22nd, "Rain told me that his position might have to be changed, when he took leave from the military. Since the Publicity Department [DEMA] made a firm request that he should become an entertainment soldier, he seemed to be determinded to change his position."
« DEMA = DEFENSE MEDIA AGENCY »

104

« ON THE WEB INTERFACE OF THE MINISTRY OF DEFENSE »

107
« AN AWKWARD QUESTION »

Wonder why was the slip of the tongue of Rain's agency so uncomfortable for the DEMA that they hurried to refute it?

108
« COMPELLING CIRCUMSTANCES »

In connection with the tender of DEMA, which was announced for the performers and actors who served among the enlisted soldiers, the political and social debates flared up again.

109
The headcount of the unit declined due to discharges so a renewal was needed.

The departing PR-soldiers:
02/16 Lee Joon Gi
03/07 Kim Ji Suk
03/28 Lee Dong Gun
04/23 Lee Wan

110
An inportant event of DEMA in Hanoi was coming in March, it was a huge celebration of the 20th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Korea and Vietnam.

111
« PRESUMPTION »

Maybe it would have meant a loss of prestige for the DEMA if the largest celebrity of the army did not attend them.

112
« THE KOREA HERALD, 02/24/2012 »

113

"The 30-year-old singer joined the military last October and was originally set to serve as an assistant instructor of recruits at a military boot camp located in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province, since he wanted to be an active-duty soldier. (Yonhap News)

114
« ACCORDING TO THE INFORMATION OF DEMA »

It can enter to the PR-unit via application. After examining the documents submitted in accordance with regulations the next step is a personal interview. After that they decide on the applications.

115
« THE MAIN QUESTION »

Did Rain request his transfer to the DEMA of his own volition?

116
« SUMMARY »

According to the reports and knowing that he undertook an extra training, it is very likely that he did NOT.

117
ATTENTION!

A detail not to escape our attention!

118
In according to the DEMA's statement RAIN SUBMITTED the required documents for his application on 02/17/2012.

119

120
« FACTS »

Rain's interview was on 02/23 and the military leadership published the result of their decision the very next day. The date of Rain's official transfer to the DEMA is 03/13/2012.

121
« FACTS »

Rain was injured during this period but yet there was no time to take his 4-day sick-leave for his medical treatment which was approved him at the 5th Division.

122
« FACTS »

They had already traveled to Vietnam on 03/17 where he could not dance therefore he only participated as MC. It can even be seen on the rehearsals of the Peace Concert on 03/26 that his leg hurts.

123

124
6TH CHAPTER
THE OPERATION OF THE DEMA

125
AMONG THE 15 SOLDIERS OF THE UNIT

126
RAIN'S TASKS AS A PR-SOLDIER

127
1.
Rain became The Honorary Ambassador of the Military Manpower Administration (MMA) on 04/10/2012. His responsibilities were to lead by example, to encourage, to make the army attractive for the young men facing conscription and contributions during the cultural events of the MMA.

128

129
2.
Regular performances at the DEMA's 'Consolatory Train' concert series which were held for the various army units to make it easier to endure the hardships of the soldiers' 2-year military service.

130

131
3.
- Preparations (themes, interviews, monitoring the letters of the listeners etc.)
- Music editing of the shows
- To host the program (with KCM) 'The Desire To Speed' radio shows which was 2 hours live Saturday-Sunday broadcast of the Friends FM military radio.

132
« RAIN AND CHANG-MO KANG (KCM) »

133
4.
Contributions at the proposal events or any other events or programs related to the army.

134-137

138
THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE PR-UNIT

139
To undeerstand this story it must be reviewed the main features of the operation of DEMA.

140
« CLARIFYING »

Were the PR-soldiers exempted from the usual military activities (cleaning of the unit, guards etc.)?

141
NO, they weren't.

142
"We're really busy. Because DEMA is also part of the army, there's a lot we have to do. The little chores, from laundry to cleaning and everything else are given to the newest members, so Ji-hoon Jung (Rain) and I are working hard."
Interview with KCM, 'Harmony' blog of the DEMA, 04/12/2012

143
"It's cruel from the Defense Agency for Public Information Services to order them to do guard duty around weapons stores as soon as they arrive. When Rain told me, "Mister! the seniors upstairs have asked you not to make any noise or run." while I was passing by, I felt very strange.
A fellow soldier who was younger than Rain at the DEMA, 03/19/2012

144
RAIN at the DEMA:
"When I worked with my rain boots on in late March, the odor from my feet was enough to knock me out."
The Desire To Speed, 06/30/2012

145
« CLARIFYING »

Were the PR-soldiers exempted from the further military trainings?

146
NO, they weren't.

147
« CLARIFYING »

Did the DEMA have technical conditions (studios, rehearsal rooms etc.) which were necessary for the PR-soldiers' preparations for the military events and performances?

148
NO, it hadn't.

149
« CLARIFYING »

So how did they supply these for the members of the unit?

150
The DEMA rented them from the external, civil service firms at various places in the city.

151
« CLARIFYING »

How did the PR-soldiers get there to these places of duty?

152
Travelling alone in the city.

153
« CLARIFYING »

Were there any regulations for the PR-soldiers in regards of the mean of transport they could use?

154
It never turned out, probably because there were no such regulations. An analysts mentioned once that use of taxi was ordered.

155
"Although initially Corporal Jung was directed to ride the taxi to make the necessary trips including rides to the Defense Ministry, since the schedule of the choreography team often made it unavoidable to attend practice at dawn or at 8 in the morning, Corporal Jung was ordered to stay at the rehearsal studio instead."
Mr. In Gyun Shin, representative of Self-Reliant National Defense, Joy News
http://joynews.inews24.com/php/news_view.php?g_menu=700100&g_serial=715291&rrf=nv

156
« CLARIFYING »

What was considered a violation on the soldiers' part?

157
The contacts with the civilians.

158
"KCM: We usually don't sleep well when we start something new, right?

RAIN: No. I slept fitfully. As this studio is packed with nice-looking men and women who are engineer, scriptwriter, PD, etc., it's just like being in a beautiful flower garden."
The Desire To Speed, 05/12/2012

159
 « CLARIFYING »

Is the prohibition of the contacts enforcable under these circumstances?

160
NO, it isn't.
IT IS A COMPLETE NONSENSE!
The workers of the studios, even the taxi driver ARE ALL CIVILIANS.

161
« CLARIFYING »

Where were the performances of the unit?

162
Across the county in various cities, mostly at the premises of the various military units.

163
« CLARIFYING »

Could only the army soldiers take part in the events?

164
NO, but civilians as well.

165
Why?

166
Because the mission of the unit was not only to raise the morale of soldiers but also to win the trust of the young people facing conscription and their parents and family members as well.

167

168
« CLARIFYING »

How did the PR-soldiers travel to the locations of the events?

169
Mostly they were transported by a separate bus.

170

171
« CLARIFYING »

What happened after the night rehearsals, studio works or performances?

172
If there was not any chance that the soldiers get back into their barracks to Seoul until midninght, then the members of the unit stayed at cheap local accomodations (the price was limited).

173
In case of the multi-day, night or early morning rehearsal or sound recordings which were adapted to the schedule of the civil participants, it happened that the soldiers were given permission for a task assignment furlough to sleep in the studio. But then they were also controlled.

174
« CLARIFYING »

Can such furlough be called a vacation?

175
OF COURSE NOT.

176
Why not?

177
Because the soldier was ordered with a task assignment command there.

Just like being on the battlefield, where the soldier is also not in the barracks and his absence is not called vacation.

178
« CLARIFYING »

Could you visit the PR-soldiers in the same way as the other enlisted soldiers in the army?

179
YES, you could.

180
Still, was there any difference in their situation?

181
YES, there was.

Because the PR-soldiers were mostly unavailable to their visitors, since they were almost everytime on the road and they also worked on weekends and public holidays.

182
« CLARIFYING »

The broadcasts of the military media (radio and television) could only be enjoyed by the conscripts?

183
NO, it couldn't.

They were open to the civilian public.

184
« CLARIFYING »

Did only Koreans follow them with attention?

185
NO, they didn't.

Because Rain is truly a world star, lots of people in a lots of countries over the world watched and listened to the shows in which he was a participant.

186
In this way the army also got an extremely valuable publicity since the international attention was directed at them too.

Many people at that time knew the history of the Korean War and its impact on the present days.

187
The radio broadcasts were immediatly translated into many foreign languages. The DEMA had to open a separate e-mail address for the messages of the foreign listeners.

188
The extensiveness of RAIN'S FAN BASE illustrating by the attendance of an American and a European fan club (according to the Flag Counter)

189
CLOUD USA

190
CLOUD HUNGARY

191
« CLARIFYING »

Could the units take part or its soldiers could be ordered to any event which was not tightly bound to the army?

192
NO, they couldn't.

193
« CLARIFYING »

Was it permitted to support public officials or politicians by the presence of the unit or its PR-soldiers?

194
NO, it wasn't.

195
« CLARIFYING »

Did it happen that the unit or its soldiers were ordered to such events?

196
YES, it did.

197
7TH CHAPTER
THE PROOF OF OUR FIRST CLAIM

198
RAIN'S MILITARY CALENDAR

199
What was the matter of the suspicions of the politicians and the media?

200
The politicians and the media at the time wanted to demonstrate on Rain that the soldiers of the PR-unit do not do their military services properly because they receive privileged treatment and excessive holidays.

201
WELL, LET'S FILL OUT RAIN'S MILITARY CALENDAR!

202
The sources of our datas are:
- the official announcements of the DEMA and the Ministry of Defense,
- the published news, reports etc. by the media,
- news, reports, comments etc. of the military and civilian social networking sites,
- what was been said in the broadcasts of the Friends FM military radio.

We have examined the dates of the events (the event could be a stop of a tour?) and their distance from the base in Seoul. We found 19 occasions in which case were reasonable to allow that the soldiers sleep in the settlement of the event.

The first Yeosu Expo concert should have been among them but then was ordered to the soldiers to travel back to the barracks at night.

In an interview on Channel A TV on 01/06/2013, Mr. In Gyun Shin, the representative of the Independent Network of National Defense gave a detailed picture about Rain's military vacations and furloughs. The 19 occasions what we found are correspond exactly to the 19 occasions which he mentioned as overnight leaves in connection with Rain's official performances.

223
"RAIN: We didn't sleep a wink the whole night. Our bus departed from Yeosu on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. right after the performance and arrived in Seoul on Sunday at 5:00 a.m. So, I think working here is harder than being trained in the training camp.
KCM: We started rehearsing as soon as our bus arrived in the morning of the day before yesterday.
RAIN: We haven't been getting sleep lately because we've been so busy. I spent a restless night and now I have a headache, but anytime we can help, just ask."

Can a soldier be ordered to regularly spend the nights traveling on a bus without sleep and yet still fulfill his duty constantly?

225
NO, he can't.

226
So, did the military officials make a right decision when they allowed the soldiers rest when the performances were visiting far locations?

227
YES, they did.

228
Were the soldiers on vacation at those occasions?

229
NO, they weren't.

230
'THE DESIRE TO SPEED' RADIO SHOWS

231
The 2-hour live shows were broadcasted on every Saturdays and Sundays. Rain made 57 radio programs of which 11 were pre-recorded broadcasts, which are framed in the calendar.

232

233

234
The programs had two hosts, Rain and Chang-mo Kang (KCM).

Rain hosted the show alone six times due to the vacations or illness of his colleague and three of them just were in December.

235
PREPARATION FOR THE YEOSU EXPO

236
Since the exact date of the 25 occasions in the announcement of the Ministry of Defense are not known we selected 25 empty days before the two concerts at Yeosu Expo.

237

238

239
« EXPLANATION »

The Yeosu Expo 2012 was declared a national importance event, so the DEMA supported the government's decision with the PR-soldiers performances.

240
The aim was to generate the interest of more overseas visitors and the easiest way to it was a concert with the best-known Korean artist, Rain.

The two DEMA shows, in which Rain featured with a long autonomous part, attracted 120,000 spectators to the Expo.

241
Then Rain had been a soldier for eight months, moreover he was shortly after an injury, so he needed to get himself into shape, ready for stage. He had to rehears with the dancers and had to adapt his show to the technical possibilities of the stage of Expo.

242
Probably the most part of these 25 occasions were only overnight furlough. Majority of the rehearsals were in the late night or early morning due to the other engagemements of the civil participants. For this reason Rain received a permission to sleep in the rehearsal studio.

243
"We phoned his studio each time to confirm that he was sleeping there" - military official said. "To our knowledge, he did not sleep outside of the studio."
The Chosun Ilbo, 01/04/2013

244
(When Rain repeatedly read the same story)

"KCM: Rain rehearsed last night until late, so he has become very forgetful and confused. (laughs)
RAIN: Actually, I'm busy preparing for the Yeosu Expo concert."
The Desire To Speed, 06/09/2012

245
« A PRACTICAL QUESTION »

Should the target practice necessary to a soldiers combat effectiveness be sonsidered as a vacation? After all he is not at war yet he is not staying in his barracks.

246
NO?!

Those soldiers who served at the DEMA had to win battle day by day on the stage - standing alone against a lot of people. So their 'preparations for the battles' took place in the rehearsal rooms and studios. Those who find this too easy, feel free to give it a try.

There are various arms but even the combat trumpeter is a soldier.

247
ILLNESSES AND HOSPITALIZATION

248

249

250
« ILLNESSES »

251
« INJURY »

Rain injured his ankle during the training and the subsequent inflammation healed very slowly. Therefore he was on sick-leave for seven days in January and a further 4 days was authorized for him for his treatment at the 5th Infantry Division which he could use only at the DEMA.

252
As the exact date of his sick-leave is not known we marked them on the only 4-day period where we could not see other official programs.

253
« THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN ON 03/28/2012 »

254
"I participated in a concert in Vietnam last time, which was followed another performance after that, and my legs, meanwhile, hurt a bit. So, it looks like performing this time will be difficult. I tried to show you wonderful stage performances today, but I'm afraid I have to take a rain check. I'll give a great performance next time."
RAIN, 5th Reservist Day, Friends FM, 04/05/2012

255

256
« HOSPITALIZATION »

257
It seems perhaps he did not feel completely well since the Vietnam trip because after the dinner on 04/05 he was hospitalized for a day.

258
« COMING HOME FROM VIETNAM »

259
"RAIN: Since you (MC) forced me to eat a lot a couple days ago, I was admitted to hospital because of acute indigestion. You shouldn't forced me to eat too much."
Friends FM Radiojumam, 04/09/2012

260
Due to the sudden onset of severe pain on 09/23/2012 evening Rain was taken to hospital.

It turned out that he had spinal disc herniation since his young age and he could not be maintained it properly in the army, so his condition increasingly worsened.

261
"... when I was a teaching assistant in the army, I had to keep standing for over 8 hours without relaxing the tense back muscles, which seemed to increase my risk of developing back pain... and I could not feel my legs the next morning..."
RAIN - Friends FM Radiojumam, 10/17/2012

262

263
"From time to time when I needed to be, I was able to be treated before and after my concerts during my activities as a singer. But I find it difficult to combine my military service with my hectic performance schedule while serving in the army... I'll carry out my duty."
RAIN - The Desire To Speed, 10/16/2012

264

265
Which does not appear in the calendar: it is known that Rain is allergic. It could follow in the broadcasts of the military radio that he struggled with his allergic rhinitis and real colds alternately and he could not recover for months.

266
"RAIN: KCM and I caught a cold due to our busy schedule. We're overloaded with work these days, but it can't helped because we're soldiers."
The Desire To Speed, 06/24/2012

267
"RAIN: Both of us have had a cold and are still indisposed today. ... Since it's pretty early to sing, it's hard to do."
The Desire To Speed, 07/01/2012

268
"RAIN: I'm sorry that I have allergic rhinitis and that I sound nasally.
(After a sneeze:)
I sneeze a lot due to the allergic rhinitis. I'm sorry for disturbing you."
The Desire To Speed, 07/15/2012

269
"RAIN: I apologize for continuing to sniffle. I don't want to do so, but it can't be helped because of my symptoms of allergic rhinitis. I had undergone various treatments without success."
The Desire To Speed, 08/25/2012

270
"RAIN: I have severe symptoms caused by allergic rhinitis, and my nose won't stop running.
KCM: You should be fully evaluated by a physician as soon as possible."
The Desire To Speed, 08/26/2012

271
"RAIN: I was treated by the doctor for allergic rhinitis recently. It has turned out that I am allergic to milk and dust mites. Dust mites are far worse than milk.
KCM: I think it's no use cleaning the studio. People who have allergi rhinitis should steadily see the doctor."
The Desire To Speed, 09/16/2012

272
« CLARIFYING »

Does sick-leave or hospital treatment sonsider a soldier's personal vacation?

273
OF COURSE NOT.

274
« THE MORAL OF THE MEDIA »

The media was full of reports foreshadowing or treating Rain's surgery, him becoming desabled and his early dismantling as a fact.

275
« RAIN'S MORAL »

Eleven days later Rain was back on stage and danced again. However he continued the series of his performances without dancing, and only singing because of his pain.

276-277

278
"[Rain]... cannot ever think of being invalided out of the army, and he must probably want to proudly leave the army even though he breaks his back."
The position of Rain's agency, 09/25/2012

279
REGULAR MILITARY TRAININGS

280
From among the regular military training we know only about two, because implicity those were not disclosed. Since the durations of the trainings are unknown we just assume that those fill in the emprty days of the calendar after the two starting days. Therefore we marked the two known days in our tables as an identified activities.

281

282

283
"CHANG-MO KANG (KCM): Our march and ranger training are scheduled for next Monday."
The Desire To Speed, 05/13/2012

284
"RAIN: We made a 10 km march last week."
The Desire To Speed, 05/20/2012

285
"RAIN & KCM: When we received guerilla training recently, KCM skinned the back of his feet and Rain hurt his knee."
The Desire To Speed, 05/19/2012

286
"RAIN: Recently we PR-soldiers visited Baengnyeong Island by ship to receive an education about the National Security."
The Desire To Speed, 08/11/2012

287

288
REGULAR AND REWARD VACATIONS

289
The detailed presentation of the vacations are in the 9th chapter of our film.

290

291

292
After the marking of the officially known tasks still 88 working days left empty in the calendar of the year 2012. Since of the tasks of these days were not published we will make some conclusions about Rain's further activities.

293-294

295
PRE-RECORDED BROADCASTS
RELOCATION

296
On a few occasions the radio show 'The Desire To Speed' were pre-recorded broadcasts (these were framed). Since at the time of these broadcasts Rain was on stage or on leave, 11 programs were recorded on other days. Therefore we move them to the unfilled days.

297-299

300
PREPARATION OF THE RADIO PROGRAMS
CALCULATION

301
The live radio show did not come about by themselves, those had to be prepared. To develop the topics, to find the interviewers and to consult with them, to read and select the messages of the listeners, to edit the songs to play on air we calculate only 4 hours per each 2-hour show.

57 shows x 4 hours = 228 hours, which are equivalent to 28,5 days 8-hour working time, rounded down: 28 days.

302

303
RETURN TO BASE
CALCULATION

304
Rain had to travel back to the Seoul base from the far locations of the performances (150-350 km). To those 15 occasions after which were not a nearby concert or not followed vacation day we calculated half a workday per each travel and now rounded up: so it's 8 days.

305

306
REGULAR MILITARY TRAININGS
CALCULATION

307
The military trainings which were marked in the calendar probably did not last only one day and if so, wete repeated several times. We marked those 6 days in the calendar, which are logically outlined after the two known dates.

308

309
WORKING WEEKENDS
COMPENSATION

310
Rain worked on 56 such days, which were weekends or holidays. Since the soldiers also have a 5-day workweek Rain was also entitled to two rest days per week.

311
So let's give him two weekdays instead of those weekends and transfer the marks of the weekends to the blank days.

312-313

314
HOWEVER, WE HAVE A PROBLEM...

315
WE RUN OUT OF THE WEEKDAYS!

316
We can not compensate 22 days for him, because even though 2012 was a leap year, it was only 366 days.

317

318
This is a clear evidence that Rain worked in intense tempo during his military service.

319
Why did we note 'minimum' at the 22 days?

320
« FURTHER TASKS »

Since we know about further tasks that Rain had to do:
- other PR-works (radio and television recording of supporting messages, poster photoshoots etc.)
- to attend in not public military events
- to do the usual military tasks (guard, cleaning etc.)
- to attend in further militarty trainings
... and so on.

321
The time what he spent on these tasks we can mark only the expense of his resting days.

322

323
"Soldiers cal also oversleep every Saturday and Sunday as the army has a five-day workweek like every other company."
RAIN - The Desire To Speed, 05/13/2012

324
"Though he talks in such a way, Rain has a great zest for his work as he has taken time from his vacation schedule to keep his promise."
Kang Chang-mo (KCM) - The Desire To Speed, 05/12/2012

325
"We soldiers are so busy that we don't have time to go for a haircut, so I cut my hair myself..."
RAIN - The Desire To Speed, 07/01/2012

326
"Actually, I've got a vacation today, but my schedule is so packed. I have to go to the 8th Division in order to appear on stage this evening, but I feel great. Couldn't be better."
RAIN - The Desire To Speed, 06/09/2012

327
"KCM: Rain is working even if he is on vacation today.
RAIN: I can't go out and let things rip though."
The Desire To Speed, 07/07/2012

328
What was our first claim?

329
Rain, or rather private soldier Ji-hoon Jung fulfilled his mandatory military service perfectly, humbly and honestly, sometimes using all his remaining strength.

330
Can we state that the facts justify our first claim?

331
YES, we can.

332
8TH CHAPTER
TWO INTERLUDES

333
AN INTERNATIONAL CIVIL MOVEMENT

334
PECULARITIES

335
« REMINDER »

What did the military leadership say at the beginning?

... Rain, the celebrity does not exist in the army. Only an ordinary soldier, private Ji-hoon Jung serving the military.

336
Howeveer, the army didn't promote private soldier Ji-hoon Jung at the Yeousu Expo, but RAIN, the world star and they expected a world-class show what was equal standard of his civil performances.

337
The world's eyes were not on private soldier Ji-hoon Jung on the stage of Yeosu Expo, but also on the world star RAIN and they expected a usual level of perfomance from him, as it was accustomed it.

338

339
But the end of June Rain's official fan club, called THE CLOUD, wrote a petition with an international support.

The fans perceived that DEMA really takes advantage of Rain's popularity and he was ordered to participate in events that were not connected to the army and therefore neither to the task of Rain as a PR-soldier.

340
« THE PETITION OF THE CLOUD »

(1) The Cloud labelled the two Expo shows in such a task. They complained that DEMA sent Rain to the press conference alone, creating an illusion if he would hold a solo concert. The mascots of the Expo in Rain's hands also show that his artistic reputation was not used only in accordance with the military obligations.

341

342
« THE PETITION OF THE CLOUD »

At that time was the election campaign period in South Korea.

(2) The Cloud complained that Rain was ordered to such events as well where the local leaders sun-bath in the light of the celebrity.

343
« bucheontimes.com (06/20/2012) »

344
« THE PETITION OF THE CLOUD »

(3) They protested against Rain's too much conflicting official programs and his overload which increased from month to month and because of that he could not recover from his illness.

345

346
THE BIGGEST BAFASS FIGHTER PILOT OF THE ROKAF

347
FIRST AMONG THE FIRST

348
A month earlier was presented the feature film 'R2B: Return To Base', sponsored by ROK Air Force and starring Rain, whose role was a fighter pilot of the Korean Army.

It is clear that Rain took a huge health risk when he passed the gravity tests during the shooting.

349
Rain not only fulfilled the obligatory 6G test, but also passed the 9G test, during which 9 times of his body weight pushed down heavily on him.

He was the first civilian who made this, but also he became the first between the professional pilots since he passed both gravity tests on the same day.

350-351
« RAIN IS UNDER 9G PRESSURE »

352
9TH CHAPTER
THE PROOF OF OUR SECOND CLAIM

353
RAIN'S MILITARY VACATIONS

354
The enlisted soldiers can acquire 10 days of leave in a scoring system in the Korean Army. Added to these the reward vacation days which are given by the commanders for the promotions and the various good performances.

355
According to the official statements in 2012, the ordinary soldiers who served for 21 months, received 43 vacation days during their entire time of service.

356
The Ministry of Defense published Rain's vacations on 01/03/2013 which appeared in the press reports.

The official statement was corrected by the Ministry the next day.

357
The check of the dates and the identification of the 10 undated days were carried out on the bases of our completed calendar and on other information which can be found on the Internet.

358
Rain's every movement leaves a mark on the web, so the photos, reports and posts by the media or fans about those occasions when he publicly appeared outside of the barracks also were published on the Internet almost immediately.

359
THE NUMBER OF THE VACATION DAYS

360
« CLARIFYING »

Was Rain on vacation in 2011?

361
NO, he wasn't.

He reached the 100th days of his military service on 01/18/2012, after which the first vacation can be given.

362
« IN TOTAL DURING THE 15 MONTHS »

367
The result of the summary:
11 days sick-leaves (these are not vacations!)
9 days regular vacation at the 5th Division
7 days vacation for the extra training at the 5th Division
23 days regular vacations at the DEMA

a total of: 39 vacations,

out of which the number of the days what can get any ordinary soldier are: 32

368
IDENTIFICATION OF THE DATES

369
« 10 DAYS IN A SCORING SYSTEM (9 DAYS LEFT) »

01/30
Television report about Rain's first short leave.

This leave was not displayed separately by the Ministry of Defense so we classified it into the undated 10 days.

« STAR NEWS, 01/30/2012 »

371
« 5 DAYS REGULAR + 4 DAYS REWARD VACATION »

02/09-17

The Korea Joongang Daily said in this report on 02/22 that according to a phone conversation with a military official Rain's vacation lasted until only 02/16. Since Rain was at the DEMA on 02/17 and he was seen at Seoul on that day, we found that the 07th is right as the last day of his vacation.

374
« 7 DAYS REWARD VACATION FOR THE EXTRA TRAINING »

02/29-03/06

The media was in fever due to Rain's transfer to the DEMA, so fan reports can be found about some places which he visited during his vacation. Rain was seen at the ceremony in the barracks on 03/08, so the date of his leave is correct.

375

376
« 10 DAYS IN THE SCORING SYSTEM (7 DAYS LEFT) »

05/09-10

The Dispatch took some pictures about Rain on the first day of his vacation in Seoul. Rain later reported on the second day of his program.

377

378
"I went to Haeundae Beach in Busan during my vacation a couple of days ago."
RAIN, The Desire To Speed, 05/19/2012

379
« 4-DAY DIVISION COMMANDER REWARD LEAVE »

05/29-06/01

The statement of the Ministry of Defense is false.
Rain could not be on leave these days, because he was on stage on three days among them (05/29, 05/30, 06/01). Maybe he just claimed these days but he took his vacation days on the other dates. Therefore these 4 days we added to the 10 undated days, so the numbers of those has risen from 10 to 14.

380

381
« 10 DAYS IN SCORING SYSTEM + 4 DAYS WITH WRONG DATE (10 DAYS LEFT) »

06/10

At Ronnie Yang's request, with whom Rain maintains almost brotherly relationship, it was permitted that Rain attend his wedding as an MC.

« 4-DAY BATTALION COMMANDER REWARD LEAVE »

06/25-28

During these vacation days, which began on his birthday, Rain was actually ill. He talked about his strong headache (perhaps because of fever?) in his radio show on 06/24 and he alsp said on 07/01 that he didn't recover completely.

384
"RAIN: KCM and I caught a cold due to our busy schedule. We're overloaded with work these days, but it can't helped because we're soldiers. ... Actually, I got a terrible headache when this show started, but now my headache hes dissipated throughout its proceedings."

385
"RAIN: Both of us have had a cold and are still indisposed today. ... Since it's pretty early to sing, it's hard to do."

Rain had two performances the previous day. The first was in Seoul and the second was in Jeju. He had travel by plane so he could meet both of his mandate. A photo was taken on 09/02 when he arrived to Seoul and in which he can be seen in civilian clothes.

387

« 10 DAYS IN SCORING SYSTEM + 4 DAYS WITH WRONG DATE (8 DA

« 10 DAYS IN SCORING SYSTEM + 4 DAYS WITH WRONG DATE (0 DA

01/22-26

The Ministry of Defense confirmed Rain's 5-day Christmas leave.

391
Nor in the official publications, nor in the press, nor in the community surfaces we could find any other indications that Rain would have been on leave on any other time.

The identification confirmed the correctness of the number of vacation days in the statement of the Ministry of Defense.

392
« VACATIONS UNTIL THE END OF 2012 »

393
CLARIFICATION OF THE ISSUE OF THE EXCESSIVE HOLIDAYS

394
ORDINARY JOE VS. RAIN

395
In 2013 Rain received further 10 days regular leaves with his promotion to sergeant. The soldiers usually reserved the part of their vacationas for the last days of the military service.

396
But even before an other investigation would have started, Rain said that he won't use his 10-day leave. He wanted to show that he took his duty seriously until its last day. A regrettable fact that a case in which although Rain was not involved would not have enabled this anyways.

397

398
« SUMMARY OF RAIN'S LEAVES »

399
Let's compare Rain's all regular leave in the questioned first 15-month period with the ordinary soldiers's proportional time of the 43-day leave that they receive in the first 15 months during their total 21-month military service:

400

401
Since we know the numbers of the received vacation days during the entire service, check out the comparison of the datas for full 21 months:

402
We know that Rain received special leave for the extra 3-week training. What does the comparison show in the case of all actually taken holidays?

403

404
So the result is:

Rain actually received LESS vacation in all aspects than the ordinary soldiers.

405

406
What was our second claim?

407
Rain, or rather private soldier Ji-hoon Jung not received any privilege or excessive holidays during the period of his military service.

408
Can we state that the facts justify our second claim?

409
YES, we can.
