New division

정지훈은 10대를 오기로 보냈고, 20대를 열의로 지냈다.
지금은 매끄러운 30대를 한창 즐기는 중이다.

체크 셔츠와 블랙 재킷은 모두 라프 시몬스(Raf Simons by Mue), 화이트 와이드 팬츠는 노앙(Nohant), 블랙 벨벳 구두는 유니페어(Unipair).

집에 있을 때 뭐해요?
집은 완벽하게 쉬는 곳이에요. 365일의 반은 외국에 있고, 하루 24시간의 반은 밖에서 일해요. 다른 생각 안 하고 가장 편히 쉴 수 있는 유일한 공간이에요.

쉴 수 있는 최적의 공간으로 꾸몄겠네요.
유일하게 욕심낸 건 TV요. 커다란 TV가 한 대 있고 침대, 소파, 식탁처럼 꼭 필요한 걸로만 단출하게 꾸몄어요. 비싸고 좋은 가구가 많겠지만 별로 흥미 없어요. 집을 어떻게 꾸밀지 관심도 없고 시간도 없어서 인테리어 전공한 친동생에게 다 맡겼어요.

요리도 가끔 하나요?
외식을 자주 하니까 지겨울 때가 있어요. 그럴 때 밥을 해 먹거나 재료가 없을 때는 고구마로 때우고 말아요. 얼마 전에 고구마를 3일 동안 말려서 반건조 상태로 만들었는데 쫀득쫀득하고 차진 게 정말 맛있는 거예요. 팔아볼까 진지하게 고민했어요.

오늘 아침까지 외국에 있었죠?
일 때문에 말레이시아와 싱가포르에 다녀왔어요. 비행기에서 자고 촬영하러 왔어요.

많은 것을 이뤘는데도 여전히 지치지 않나봐요.
좋은 작품과 좋은 기회를 놓칠 수 없는 건 누구나 그렇지 않을까요? 편한 길을 가고 싶지만, 쉬운 만큼 위험한 일이라고 생각해요. 대부분의 사람들이 배우를 연기 잘하는 배우, 비주얼이 좋은 배우, 스타성이 뛰어난 배우로 나누던데 저는 작품을 잘 선택할 수 있는 배우가 되고 싶어요. 그렇게 되려면 아직도 모자라요. <내겐 너무 사랑스러운 그녀>를 촬영하면서 발음이랑 발성 연습부터 다시 시작했어요.

셔츠와 재킷, 오버사이즈 팬츠는 모두 김서룡(Kimseoryong), 블랙 워커는 팔라디움(Palladium).

오랜만에 하는 연기였기 때문인가요?
몇 년 쉬기도 했지만 당연한 일이었어요. 기본인 발성과 발음을 갖추지 않으면 안 된다고 생각했으니까요. 연기를 처음 시작했을 때는 변명거리가 있었지만, 이제는 스스로에게도 시청자들에게도 부끄러운 일은 하고 싶지 않아요.

국내 작품과 해외 작품의 밸런스에 대해 생각하나요?
작품을 시작한 지 10년 정도가 되니 흥행과는 상관없이 해보고 싶은 역할이 분명히 있어요. 스케줄에 구애받을 수밖에 없지만 되도록이면 하고 싶은 작품을 해요. 화제나 흥행을 고려하고 시작해도 결과는 누구도 알 수 없어요. 욕심내거나 무리하지 않고 자연스럽게 스펙트럼과 커리어를 넓혀가고 싶어요. 데뷔 초에는 열심히 했는데 원하는 방향으로 가지 않으면 자책하고 억울했어요. 이제는 맡은 역할을 제대로 보여줬는지 제대로 끝맺었는지가 중요해요.

‘데뷔 몇 년 차’, ‘30대’ 같은 숫자들에 자유롭나요?
대기업이라고 생각하면 전 부장 정도 직급인 것 같아요. 진영이 형과 현석이 형이 사장님이신 것 같고요. 저는 아직 올라갈 곳이 한참 남은 거죠. 그런데 이제 막 시작하고 커가려는 후배들도 많아요. 지금보다 더 노력을 해서 제대로 자리를 잡아서 확실한 중간 역할을 해야겠다는 생각은 있어요.

시간이 바꾸어놓은 것들도 있겠죠?
1999년에 ‘비’라는 이름의 댄서로 시작해 가수로 데뷔한 지 14년째예요. 당연히 날 선 칼처럼 뾰족하던 시기도 있었어요. 지금은 넘어질 땐 넘어지기도 하고 어떻게 일어서는지도 알고 있어요. 내적인 것과 별개로 아날로그 세대에서 디지털 세대로의 변모를 겪었고, 한류라는 특수한 흐름의 수혜를 받기도 했어요.

롱 저지 셔츠와 화이트 재킷, 블랙 팬츠는 모두 레저렉션(Resurrection), 양말은 해피삭스(Happy Socks), 운동화는 아디다스(Adidas).

오랜 시간 해온 것들 중 가장 익숙한 건 뭔가요?
춤이랑 연기요. 다른 건 생각할 수 없어요.

아무리 해도 익숙해지지 않는 것들은요?
사진 찍히는 거요. 원래 셀카도 잘 안 찍었어요. 순간적으로 이미지가 소비되는 것 같다는 생각이 들어서요. 이제서야 조금 즐기게 된 것 같아요.

10대와 20대, 30대를 짤막하게 간추려 볼래요?
10대는 독했고 20대는 열정이 넘쳤어요. 30대는 부드러워지려고요.

좀 전에 대기업을 예로 든 건 <미생>의 영향인가요. 주인공과 비교하자면요?
오 차장요. 혼낼 땐 혼내고, 가르쳐줄 땐 가르쳐주고, 감싸안을 땐 감싸안는 타입?

처음으로 작품에서 ‘아저씨’라는 호칭을 들었어요.
<내겐 너무 사랑스러운 그녀>의 현욱은 ‘키다리 아저씨’예요. 여주인공인 수정이와 실제로 열두 살이나 차이가 났고요. 당연히 아저씨라 불릴 나이라 별다른 느낌은 없었어요.

꾸준히 해외 작품을 촬영하는 몇 안 되는 배우예요.
감사하게도 할리우드 작품을 비롯해 좋은 작품 제의가 꾸준히 들어와요. 그럴수록 생각이 많아져요. 주연을 맡았던 <닌자어쎄씬>에서 강한 액션을 연기해서인지 액션 배우로 제의가 들어와요. 하지만 변화도 필요하고 여러 모습을 보여주고 싶어 단역이라도 다양한 배역을 맡으려고 해요. 로맨틱 코미디도 해보고 싶어요.

중국으로 활동 영역을 넓히기 시작했어요.
처음으로 출연한 중국 영화 <노수홍안>이 얼마 전에 중국에서 개봉했어요. 가오시시 감독님은 드라마 <초한지>로 큰 성공을 거둔 분이고, 유역비 씨는 중국을 대표하는 여배우 중 한 명이에요. 이런 스태프와 일한 건 행운이었고, 이런 작업을 꾸준히 한다면 외국 배우가 아니라 국적과는 상관없는 배우가 될 수 있을 거라 생각해요.

함께 작업하고 싶은 감독이나 연기자가 있나요?
다시 한 번 박찬욱 감독님과 영화를 찍고 싶어요. 또 멋진 선배님들과 함께 배워가면서 더 많은 작업을 하고 싶어요.

박진영 프로듀서와 워쇼스키 남매를 만난 것이 인생의 전환점이 되었다고 했어요. 세 번째 누군가를 기다리고 있나요?
세 번째는 벌써 왔을지도 몰라요. 아니면 아예 안 올지도 모르겠다는 생각이 들어요. 요즘이 가장 행복하고 만족해서 그런가 봐요. 노래하고 싶을 때 노래하고, 좋은 작품을 선택할 수 있는 지금 말이에요.

바로 새 작품을 시작해요.
<운명처럼 널 사랑해>의 원작을 연출한 진명장 감독님의 <캐럿 연인>이라는 드라마를 찍어요. 내일모레 촬영하러 중국으로 떠나요. 3개월 동안 중국에 머물러요. 스케줄은 잘 몰라요. 저는 가라는 데로 가고 오라는 데로 움직이는 사람이에요. 하하.

도무지 쉬지를 않네요.
<내겐 너무 사랑스러운 그녀>를 마치고 정말 아무것도 안 할 생각이었어요. 그런데 <캐럿 연인> 출연 제의가 들어왔어요. 안 할 수가 없었어요. 그러고 보니 지금까지 언제나 이렇게 쉬지 않고 일했네요. 이번 작품을 마치면 꼭 쉴 거라고 다짐하고 있는데 3월에 멋진 일이 생기면 또

미국에 갈 거예요. 자유롭게 돌아다닐 수 있고, 새로운 걸 보고 공부할 수 있는 나라니까요. 가만히 앉아서 쉬는 건 잘 못해요. 다음 음반 구상도 해야 할 것 같아요.

2015년은 뭔가 달라질 것 같나요?
2014년은 새롭게 데뷔한 것처럼 보냈어요. 2014년이 몸을 푸는 단계였다면 2015년은 안 해본 것들, 재미있는 것들을 해볼 거예요. 그래서 오늘 이렇게 멍한 사진도 찍었어요.

Jung Ji Hoon’s teenage was filled with pride. His 20s was filled with passion. Now he is enjoying his smooth 30s.

What do you do when you are at home?

Home is where you can perfectly rest. I spend half of the 365 days year overseas, half of the 24 hours day working outside. Therefore home is a place where I don’t need to think of anything but just rest comfortably.

You want to design your home to be the best resting place.

My only greed is a huge TV, which is a necessity to me. There are lots of expensive and nice furniture, but I am not interested. I don’t care too much about interior design, and I don’t have the time. I leave this job to my sister who majors in this.

Sometimes you will cook?

I eat a lot outside so sometimes I get tired of it. When this happens I will cook at home. If there isn’t any ingredient then I use sweet potatoes instead. Not long ago I dried sweet potatoes for 3 days. They were semi dry, very chewy and delicious. I was seriously concerned if I should sell them.

You were overseas until this morning?

I had schedules in Malaysia and Singapore. Slept on the plane and came here directly for the photography.

You achieved so much but there was no sign of being exhausted.

Who wouldn’t be like that in order not to miss a good job and a good opportunity? Although I also wish to walk a comfortable path, I feel that is very dangerous. Most people will classify actors into categories: good acting, good visual, outstanding star quality. As for myself, I wish to be an actor who knows how to choose his work. To become like that I still lack a lot. Therefore when I shot “My Lovely Girl” I started with basic training on pronunciation and vocalization.

Is this because you haven’t acted for a long time?
It’s true I didn’t do it for a few years, but still it was something I should do. I cannot accept not having the basic skills of pronunciation and vocalization. One could still explain when one just started to do drama series, but now I don’t want to do anything I myself, or the audience, would feel ashamed.

What do you think of the balance between domestic and overseas work?

It has been 10 years since I started acting, and now I am clear that I would like to try roles which have nothing to do with the box office. Despite that I am bound by my schedules, I try my best to do what I want to do. Even though you think of topical works and box office in the beginning, nobody really knows what the result will be. I will not be over ambitious, but will naturally expand my spectrum and my career. In my early debut years, if I worked hard but things did not go the direction that I wanted, I would blame myself and felt being wronged. But now, what is important to me is to show what my role needs to show and finish it well.

“Debut number of years” “30s” do you feel free about these numbers?

If we think in the way of a big corporation, then I think my current position is division head, where as Jin Young hyun and Hyun Suk hyun are CEOs. I still have a long way to move upwards. However there are also many juniors who are about to strive forward. I feel I need to work harder than now to secure my position, so that I could do a good job as the one in the middle.

Times have changed things right?

I started as a dancer in the name of Rain in 1999. It’s 14 years since my debut. I had peak times like the blade of a sharp knife. Now when I fall, even if I fall, I know how to get up again. Internally we changed from analogue age to digital age, and we benefited from the special k-pop current.

Of the things you do constantly, which is most skilled?

Dancing and acting. I couldn’t think of others.

And what you feel not familiar no matter what you do?

Taking photos. Originally I don’t even take selfies much, thinking that it was just a momentary image. Recently I enjoyed it a bit.

How would you summarize briefly your 10s, 20s, and 30s?

My 10s was venomous, 20s was passionate, in my 30s I want to be soft and tender.

You gave an example of big corporation just now. How do you compare yourself to the characters in the drama “Misaeng”?

Manager Oh. The type who will scold when he should , teach as he should, and protect when he should?

First time being called “uncle” in your work.

I played the role of Daddy Long Legs in the drama “My Lovely Girl”. There is a 12 years age gap between me and the female lead Krystal, so of course I am being called uncle. I don’t have particular feelings about that.

Actor with constant overseas projects.

I am grateful that I receive good proposals constantly, including those from Hollywood. The more this goes on the more thoughts come to me. Probably due to the strong action skills in my lead role movie “Ninja Assassin”, I received many proposals to be an action actor. But I feel changes are necessary, and I want to show my different sides. I want to play various roles, even if they are supporting roles. I want to do a romantic comedy.

You are starting to expand your spectrum in China.

My first Chinese movie “For Love or Money” was shown in China recently. Director Gao Xi Xi achieved great success in his drama “The Three Kingdom”. Crystal Liu is one of the representing female actresses in China. It was my fortune to work with them. I feel that if I continue to do this, then I can become an actor who is not restricted by nationality, and not being labeled as an overseas actor.

Any director or actors whom you want to work with?

I hope to shoot a movie with Director Park Chan Wook again. I also hope to learn from my seniors and work more with them together.

You mentioned that meeting Producer JYP and meeting the Wachowskis were two turning points in your life. Are you waiting for a third one?

May be the third one has already come. And it also occurred to me too that may be it will not come. Recently I am very happy, very satisfied. I can sing when I want to sing, and I can choose good projects.

You have already started a new project.

I will shoot “Diamond Lover” directed by Chen Ming Zhang. I will go to China in a couple of days and will stay there for 3 months. I don’t know the schedule. I am the kind of person who moves as I am told to come and go, haha.

You haven’t stopped and rest at all.

I did have the thought that I won’t do anything after shooting “My Lovely Girl”. But then I received proposal to shoot “Diamond Lover” and I have to do it. Now I made up my mind to take a rest after this drama, but who knows if a good project will come up in March.

If you were given one month holiday starting tomorrow, what would you do?

I would go to the U.S.A. I could wander around freely. USA is a country with things to see and to learn. I am not the type of person who could just sit and rest and do nothing. Looks like I need to start thinking about my next album.

What will be the changes in 2015?

My 2014 is like I have a fresh debut again. If 2014 is the stage to relax my body, then in 2015 I want to do things I have not done before, and do interesting things. That’s why today I am shooting dopey style photos.

In keeping with this week's festive events theme, let me take you to Singapore where we recently celebrated the launch of our wonderful Heimat collaboration with German pop-artist Stefan Strumbel. The collection was welcomed with great joy at our Marina Bay Sands boutique in Singapore. To further help with the celebrations, we invited our good friend Rain to attend the opening and indulge the fans by signing their latest MCM purchases. Just imagine owning an MCM x Strumbel bag signed by Rain! Pretty much the coolest, right? The Stefan Strumbel collaboration collection is inspired by the traditional cuckoo clock motif, hailing straight out of the Black Forest region in Germany. It is a modern take on the old German motif and so far it has attracted many favours from the international cool set.
